Growing Your Own Vegetable Garden

Having the thought of fresh salads out of your own garden is really great. It also makes you feel more at ease that your salad hasn’t been massacred by the chef at the restaurant. Having your own vegetable garden is one of the fun ways of gardening. However learning to start-up properly will greatly help your chances of eating your own salads. Here are some tips to get that successful vegetable garden growing instead of weeds.

It is first important to find a place where the garden can receive abundant light. The garden should at least receive 6 hours of sunlight. It would be better if it receives more. Try to find a place that is not shaded. The area you find should also be close to a water source and has good drainage. If it is your first time to put-up a vegetable garden, start small, about 8 by 10 feet.

If the area you have chosen has not been used as vegetable garden before, it is best to remove the previous vegetations or lawn there. You may use a sod cutter or your hand to remove the vegetation. You’ll also remove some weight while you’re at it. After, loosen the soil by using power tools or your hand. This is done to break the soil, make it easier to plant and adds oxygen to the soil.

The soils in urban areas are usually clay and are hard to work with. That’s why adding compost and other organic material helps. It’s best to put compost as deep as you can by using a tiller or your hand. Remember to also add compost every year to maintain the soil’s quality.

After being able to ready the soil, you are now ready to plant. It’s best to create a written plan first. In your written plan put the vegetables you’d want to plant and if they’d be able to grow easily.

Amateur gardeners should start out with vegetables from the nursery rather than those from seeds. This helps them avoid the irritation hat comes from raising vegetables from seeds. When you are choosing form the nursery, choose the healthiest. The healthiest plants are those that are bright green, roots that re not bound in the pots and are bushy.
